Company member roles and permissions

Every person on a company's team holds one of three roles — Admin, Moderator or Member — and the role decides what they can do with that company. An invitation always arrives as a plain Member, so this is the page for giving somebody more, or less, than they have now.

Roles are per company. The same person can be an Admin of one company and a Member of another, and each of those is a separate decision made by that company's Admins.

What each role can do

Admin Moderator Member
See the company's page and its team roster yes yes yes
Edit company details, logo and contact information yes yes no
Invite people, change roles and remove members yes no no
Delete the company yes no no

Nothing in this table depends on a paid package or on the state of an event. A company that is not connected to any event manages its team exactly the same way.

A role applies to one company only

A Moderator of one company has no special standing anywhere else. If the same person belongs to a second company, an Admin of that company decides their role there separately, and this table applies to it independently.

How to change someone's role

Roles are changed on the company's own page, on the Team members card — the same roster described in Inviting and removing members.

  1. On the member's row, press Change role.
  2. The menu that opens lists Make admin, Make moderator and Make member, and it shows only the roles that person does not already have — whichever two of the three are missing from their current role. It always shows two, never three.
  3. Press the one you want. The confirmation Member role updated. appears and the badge in the Role column changes to the new role straight away.

Remove sits at the bottom of the same menu, in red, below the three role entries — that one takes the person out of the company entirely rather than changing their role. It is covered in Inviting and removing members.

Changing a role happens immediately, with nothing to undo

There is no confirmation dialog between pressing an entry in the menu and the role changing — the Member role updated. toast is what tells you it worked. While the change is being saved the member's Change role button is greyed out, so you cannot fire two changes at one person.

The role you set is the role the person has from that moment on: their Edit company button, the invitation field and the Delete company card all appear or disappear on their own screen according to it. You do not have to tell them, and there is no separate step for it.

What the roles look like

Each role has its own badge in the Role column, with its own icon:

  • Admin — a shield, on the filled badge.
  • Moderator — a person with a cog, on the lighter badge.
  • Member — a group of people, on the lighter badge.

Your own row carries a small You badge next to your name and has nothing at all in the Actions column — so you cannot change your own role from this page. A company cannot demote its own last Admin either, which is why an Admin who wants to hand over has to promote somebody else first.

Who can change roles

Only an Admin of that company can. A Moderator and a plain Member both see the whole roster, but the Change role button is not rendered on their rows at all and the invitation field above the table is missing — so the question does not arise for them.

Changing somebody else to Admin is the one change that widens what other people in the company can do, and it is immediate and silent on their side. Promote somebody to Admin only when you intend them to have that authority.

If something goes wrong

What you see What it means What to do
The Change role button is missing from every row You are a Moderator or a Member, not an Admin. Ask an Admin of the company to make the change.
Your own row has no Actions content You cannot change your own role, by design. Ask another Admin to change it for you.
The menu offers only two entries, not three It only lists roles the person does not already hold, so the one they have is missing on purpose. Nothing is wrong — pick from the two.
An error toast reading Failed to update member role. The change was refused or did not save. Try again. If it keeps failing, the person may have left the company in the meantime.
An error toast saying you cannot do it as the only admin You are the only Admin and the change would leave the company without one. Invite and promote a second Admin first, then make the change.
The role badge changed but the person still sees what they saw before They were looking at an older screen. Their controls follow the new role the next time the page loads.
